Welcome to Ms. Emily's class!
Hello class and parents! I am so excited to be at Pope Elementary this school year and teaching in your child's classroom! Since I will be spending a lot of time with your child this year, I would just like to take a minute to introduce myself to you. My name is Emily Sissom, and I am a senior special education major and elementary education minor at Union University. I will graduate in May of 2015. I also am a member of the Union University Women's Basketball team. I am from a small town in Middle Tennessee called Woodbury where i plan to move after I graduate. My family has always been a big part of my life; they are my biggest supporters and fans. I have two younger sisters, Abbey and Anna Grace. I also recently became engaged this summer, so I will be getting married next June! I have grown up in church going atmosphere, and because that, God has always been a huge part of my life. I love traveling and going on mission trips to serve the less fortunate. I have been to Haiti the past two years. I try to live my life so that His light shines through me as an example to others, doing my best to bring Him the glory always.
I have chosen the field of education because I feel like God is tugging on my heart to be led to serve children, especially children with special needs. I find so much joy in being around children and being able to teach them something new. I want to be a positive influence in their lives and hopefully be able to make a difference in their lives. My mom has been a teacher all my life which is one of the big reasons why I became interested in education. Seeing how much joy she gets from educating youth has given me a desire to do the same. I believe God has blessed me with many qualities that will help me in the teaching field, the main qualities being patience and compassion for children. Education gives me an opportunity to be a positive influence and role model in children’s lives who may not have been as fortunate as me when I was younger. It also gives me a chance to spend time with children, something I would love and enjoy the rest of my life.
My Philosophy on teaching is a reflection of the constructivist theory. John Dewey, a constructionist, explained that we construct knowledge by participating and learning events. I strongly agree with this idea because I believe that the best way for students to learn is by actually doing it. I know that each child will learn differently, and as a teacher I want to find out each of those learning styles for all of my students. Other constructionist decided that young children learn best from experiences and adaptation. I believe that as a teacher, coming in with a hands on approach will give students opportunities to be a part of the learning interaction rather than just verbally telling them material to memorize. I want to have positive expectations for all my students and encourage them to strive to do their very best in all circumstances. I want to prepare my students not only for standardized testing, but also for real world situations that they can use the rest of their lives. My main goal is to be able to teach my students in a way that fit allows each of them to get full potential of learning and influence them to be the best they can be in all areas of life.
I absolutely love working with children, and I am so excited about this year! We are going to have so much fun! I look forward to meeting and getting to know you and your child this year!
